Snails and slugs can cause significant damage to artichokes. The dense canopy, and frequently irrigated and moist environment provide ideal conditions for mollusks to feed and propagate.

Many growers treat using metaldehyde or other compounds on regular schedules immediately following a major rain or irrigation event. A weather-resistant blanket of protection needs to be easily accessible when the slugs and snails begin nightly feeding. Plentiful baiting points are critical for getting rid of slugs since they often do not venture far to feed, and to impact less-mobile juveniles. Higher active ingredient concentrations do not always translate to better control, but can adversely impact bait palatability. Innovative growers have found that using application equipment designed for banded application of granular products between rows and/or directed towards the base of the plants at low rates to be effective. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices incorporating Metarex at reduced rates have been shown to achieve outstanding control and significantly less crop damage.

The Solution

Artichoke slug and snail bait like Metarex, is a 4% Metaldehyde bait with reduced-rate technology offers maximum palatability, and many more baiting points per lb., all leading to earlier feeding and faster, better control. Farm growers have also found that Metarex, made using a wet-process similar to that used for food-grade pasta, can become wet and will re-harden - offering superior irrigation and mold resistance, and yielding long field life.

Superior Weatherability

Successful preventative treatments can be made with rates as low as 5 Metarex pellets per square foot, and bait can remain available for up to 3 weeks under intense conditions.

Superior Mold Resistance

Metarex’s no dust formula will not clog or dirty application equipment as with other baits, leading to less waste and providing better coverage, saving valuable clean-up time.

Application Tips

Perennial: Apply Metarex at a rate of 9 to 25 lbs. per acre. The maximum application rate is 25 lbs. per acre (1.0 lb ai/A) per application. A maximum of 6 applications are permitted at a minimum retreatment interval of 18 days.

Annual: Apply Metarex at a rate of 9 to 25 lbs. per acre. The maximum application rate is 25 lbs. per acre (1.0 lb ai/A) per application. A maximum of 2 applications are permitted at a minimum retreatment interval of 18 days. See entire label.
